FIGURES

 a study in restraint. 

some moments ask for more; some quietly ask to be noticed for what they are. 

the fig is the latter. a violet vessel that engulfs summer’s jam, delicately. it rarely needs much more than a bite on a long day under the sun. 

The concept for FIGURES came from a deep craving to create freely. I'm incredibly interested in making the practical ornamental; the ordinary extraordinary. This one started with a fig, which is just coming into the season as the August sun settles in. These figs came from some friends at Natoora and left me itching to play with color. I’ve been inspired by interiors with baby blue, burgundy, and chrome, and I can't help but find the parallels of the fig's palette. Nature continues to reveal itself as the most intelligent creative director.

In recent shoots, I've noticed myself enjoying the moments that ask for more: more props, more motion, more contrast. It has led to rabbit holes of curiosity and some work that is intriguing. Yet the more I chased, the less I wanted to focus. this time, my only intent was to work with figure and restraint. pay attention to what is simple about the composition of the color, the shape, the room. notice the figure as it is.

The more I focused, the more I asked myself, “stay here for a moment,” and the more the composition became interesting. photography has always been meditative for that reason; there comes a moment just before the shutter flashes when it’s just you and what’s happening in the viewfinder.

The result is a collection of work that is honest, yet the style of contrast in my craft remains: this time with high-low, pairing a raw fig with a watch, a caviar spoon, and a silver tray.
